My Hero Academia's Finale Could Hinge on One Last Returning Villain

July 2024 · 5 minute read

There's only one prominent My Hero Academia villain who has yet to play a role in the Final War arc, and the time for his arrival might be at hand.

Warning: Spoilers for My Hero Academia Chapter #415

Summary

My Hero Academia's finale grows ever closer, but the battle between Shigaraki and Deku is still raging on. With Deku struggling to stay in the fight and forced to sacrifice his Quirks one by one, he could really use any help he can get--and that help may be coming in an unexpected form, thanks to Eri.

Chapter #415 reveals that Shigaraki and Deku's battle is being recorded by one of Hatsume's drones, televised so that everyone across Japan can watch the fate of the world play out. Among the people watching was young Eri, the girl whose Quirk can rewind time. At the chapter's end, Eri takes off running somewhere, although it's not clear exactly where she's headed.

She obviously wants to help Deku somehow, but he's far away and in an insanely dangerous place. While Deku has fought alongside Eri before, there's almost no chance of her joining the fight now. There is however, one villain who has yet to appear in the final war, and it happens to be the one closest to Eri: Kai Chisai, akaOverhaul.

Could Overhaul Really Come to Deku's Aid?

My Hero Academia by Kohei Horikoshi, chapter #415, "Rejection"

So far, almost every major villain has had a role to play in the finale. Characters like Lady Nagant, Stain, and Gentle Criminal got to come back as allies, while others, like the Sludge Villain from the very first chapter, proved they were still as evil as ever. Overhaul is the only major story arc villain who has yet to appear; that may be because Shigaraki cut off Overhaul's hands, rendering it impossible for him to use his Quirk. However, if there's one character who can help Overhaul with that problem, it's Eri.

It's true that Overhaul abused Eri quite a lot, and she has every reason to be afraid of him, but she also knows how powerful he is. It's plausible that, in desperation to save Deku, Eri might be willing to face her fears and see Overhaul face-to-face once again. While Overhaul doesn't have much reason to help Deku, he certainly has a grudge against Shigaraki, which might be all the motivation he needs to get involved. Deku did save Overhaul's life in the battle against Lady Nagant, if that counts for anything.

Kai Chisaki's Quirk, Overhaul, gives him the power to disassemble or reassemble things he touches, including people. He can kill with a touch or heal by reassembling people's bodies.

If his hands are restored, Overhaul could use his Quirk to heal Deku's injuries, helping the boy to stay in the fight longer. That alone would be incredibly helpful, considering the state that Deku is currently in, held together by Blackwhip and little else. It wouldn't be as powerful as Shigaraki's regeneration, of course, but Deku needs any healing he can get. It's far from certain just what Eri is planning at this point, but it makes a lot of sense for her to turn to Overhaul, whose absence from the finale has become conspicuous.

Of course, even if Overhaul does help, that doesn't absolve him of his past sins; Overhaul will still be a terrible villain, just one who doesn't want to see the world destroyed at Shigaraki's hands. My Hero Academia's big final battle may come down to whether this dangerous villain is willing to stand against Shigaraki and help Deku, and it all depends on Eri.

My Hero Academia

In My Hero Academia, some humans have superpowers called quirks. Izuku Midoriya, nicknamed Deku, is not one of them. Deku has always idolized heroes like the number one hero, All Might, and since he was a child, he has always wanted to be a hero. However, his lack of a quirk has always held him back, but a chance encounter with All Might after discovering a classmate in danger sets Deku on the path to becoming a true hero. My Hero Academia centers around Deku and a class of heroes-in-training at UA. This school shapes young quirk users into future heroes through fake rescue missions, combat training, and other hero-tempering tasks. With young Deku inheriting the "One-For-All" quirk, he will learn what it means to be a true hero while facing off with dastardly supervillains.
