Sadly, most of those stars are gone. One legendary actor died during the show's run, in 1973, at the age of 74—Glenn Strange, a real New Mexico cowboy who played the character named Sam, the bartender. The regular actors who are still with us are Actor Roger Ewing (Thad Greenwood), who is 73b years old now; Buck Taylor (Newly O'Brien), who is 77; and Burt Reynolds (Quint Asper), who is 79.

1. James Arness (Marshall Matt Dillon)

Marshall Matt Dillon certainly evolved throughout Gunsmoke. Initially, Arness based The Marshall on his radio counterpart, but since the show, Gunsmoke became America's longest-running action show until Law and Order show, Arness had plenty of time to mold the character into his technique and skills. First, he is recovering from serious injuries he obtained overseas in World War II. Then, he hitchhiked his way to the city of California and began scoping out agencies and casting calls for the mission. Arness adapted to California city life swimmingly, his favorite hobby becoming surfing. Beachgoers could spot the 6'1″ character Marshall Matt Dillon hanging up his holsters and enjoying some tubular waves on an Island. Actor Arness had the unique pleasure of playing Marshall Dillon's character for five separate decades from 1955 to 1975 for the weekly series and reprising the role for TV Movies in the 1980s and 1990s. All that hard work earned him to become a Hollywood Walk of Fame star organization, which now honors the late legend who passed at the age of 88 in 2011.

2. Dennis Weaver (Chester Goode) 

Every Marshall needs a right-hand man by his side every though the situation on a mission, and legendary actor Matt Dillon could count on Chester Goode. But unfortunately, a devoted friend and partner, Weaver's Chester, walked with a limp. So the rumor is created that they would place a rock in his boot, making his limp more authentic. After that, Weaver worried he'd never get away from the character from the Gunsmoke show. And in the year 1964 finally shed the limp and went from a sidekick to a leading man in NBC's Kentucky Jones. But the show didn't last long, but it gave Weaver a taste of success and independence he'd thirsted for. In 1971, he starred infamous director Steven Spielberg's TV movie Duel, and he starred in the main cast of McCloud's character from 1970 to 1977. Dennis Weaver was an environmentalist in his personal life before and after his retirement. He promoted care for the ecosystem organization for decades until his death in 2006 at 81.

3. Amanda Blake (Miss Kitty Russell)

Many businesses and missions target down at salon in this show, where the character Miss Kitty Russell comes in, and every watcher is getting so excited. For almost two decades, actress Amanda Blake played everyone's favorite sassy redhead with a heart of gold. Her personal life was a success story like a milestone. She was married almost four times, but while married to her third husband, our saloon proprietress raised cheetahs in captivity successfully. Actress Blake entered semi-retirement early to focus on animal welfare. Unfortunately, her health condition became worse, and she died in 1989 when she was just 60 years old.

4. Milburn Stone (Doc Adams)

Doc Adams is a legendary actor. After the scraps they settled, someone had to patch up our rugged and powerful heroes. Doc was played a character of a testy curmudgeon in this show. He stayed on the show for most of its end of the season. Milburn Stone comes from a whole family of artists and idols. One of his cousins is character actress Madge Blake, who played Mrs. Cooper in nearly 100 episodes of Adam West's Batman show. His brother Joe wrote two episodes of Gunsmoke, Baker's Dozen in '67 and The Fugitives in '72. Unfortunately, Gunsmoke's fame came very late in his career and life. Milburn Stone wrestled hard with CBS to make sure he received royalties. All that is insisting paid off; Stone stuck with the show until it ended in '75. The legendary actor was finally able to retire, but it is sad to say. Doc was not present in any Gunsmoke reunion films.

5. Ken Curtis (Festus Haggen)

Character Fetus Haggen served as a structural replacement for the departure of Chester Goode. However, Haggen brought something else to the deputy job: friendship and humor. The rugged yet bumbling companion provided great amusement with his verbal feuds with Doc Adams's character. Ken and Arness had plenty of time to bond early on this show. Ken Curtis had a few different roles in Gunsmoke before settling into Haggen permanently in season 8 of this show. Out of the Marshall's five deputies' organization, Festus held the title the longest, with a whopping 11 years under his floppy hat.

6. Buck Taylor (Newly O'Brien)

There are few people whose wrong side we never want to see less than actor Newly O'Brien. He wasn't just a deputy, but also he was once a gunsmith character, so he knew about firearms technique and skills. Buck Taylor was a frequenter of westerns actor, but Dallas city huge fans will also recognize him as Detective Busseynof Gunsmoke. In 1987, he returned to Dodge literally; it's like in Gunsmoke Return to Dodge. Wow, it becomes a milestone for his career. But this rugged gunsmith-turned-deputy-turned-marshall has inside soft side personality. He's been selling his painting work since 1993. He played Emmet Walsh on Yellowstone From 2018 to 2020. In 2022, He's now 83 years old.

7. Glenn Strange (Sam Noonan)

The level-headed character Sam Noonan walked into the bar first in Season 6 of Gunsmoke's legendary show. He worked on the show until his death in 1973 at age 74. When everybody dealing with gunfights and bar brawls, you need a solid voice of reason, and that was Sam. He seems to be quite a bit in shooting this show. He was also excellent as the murderous Butch Cavendish in The Lone Ranger. Strange appeared in over 300 projects throughout his career, but his most significant role besides Gunsmoke was monstrous. Unknown's facial features and towering 6 ft 5-inch height made him the perfect Frankenstein's monster in House of Frankenstein (1944), House of Dracula (1945), and Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). He even received coaching from horror movie icon Boris Karloff, who originated the role in 1931. The duo became so well-known that when Karloff died, the New York Times put a picture of Glenn Strange as Frankenstein's monster instead of Karloff. Oops! But it was a lovely accidental tribute. Even though Strange died in 1973, his Gunsmoke co-star Buck Taylor named his son after him to keep his memory alive. That's when the cast becomes family.

8. Burt Reynolds (Quint Aspen)

Burt played Quint Aspen, the mixed-race blacksmith who could always win a fight in this show, even without a pistol; what a crazy man. This actor was part of the Dodge Community for Seasons 8-10. He was working on this show very brilliantly, and with outstanding performance, no one can beat him acting in this character. The whole production, running for 20 seasons and airing 635 episodes, "Gunsmoke" is the longest-running live-action drama in United States television history. CBS produced new episodes from 1955 to 1975, and the show proved popular in syndicated reruns. In 1987, many original "Gunsmoke" cast members reunited to appear in "Gunsmoke: Return To Dodge," a made-for-television movie. Unfortunately, Milburn Stone had passed away by then, and CBS didn't recast his character, Doc. Four more "Gunsmoke" television movies aired in the 1990s. "Gunsmoke" debuted initially as a radio serial in 1952. The radio series was notable for its dark tone and voices in its early years. However, it gradually adopted the lighter, folksier feel evident in the TV series in Hollywood.
