ORIGIN
Patty Duke was an Oscar-winning American actress and mental health activist. She was born Anna Marie Duke on December 14, 1946 in Elmhurst, New York. Her mother, Frances, suffered from bipolar disorder and her father, John Brock, was an alcoholic. She had two siblings, Raymond and Carol. Duke’s name was changed from ‘Anna Marie’ to ‘Patty’ by her guardians, John and Ethel Ross. She attended Quintano’s School for Young Professionals.

CAREER
Duke started out doing commercials before landing bit parts in television. One of her first screen appearance was on the 1950s soap opera, The Brighter Day. Her breakout role was that of “Helen Keller” in the Broadway play, The Miracle Worker, from 1959-1961. She reprised the role in the 1962 film adaptation and was honored with the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She was 16 years old at the time.

In 1962, Duke became the star of her very own sitcom, The Patty Duke Show. The series ran for three seasons on ABC from 1963-1966. She was later cast as “Neely O’Hara” in the 1967 drama film, Valley of the Dolls. Duke followed suit with a starring role as “Natalie Miller” in the 1969 comedy-drama, Me, Natalie. She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. She picked up her second Emmy for the 1977 miniseries, Captains and the Kings. Duke served as President of the Screen Actors Guild from 1985-1988. She became an advocate for mental health following her 1982 bipolar disorder diagnosis.

PERSONAL
Patty Duke died on March 29, 2016 at the age of 69. Her reported cause of death was sepsis from a ruptured intestine. She is survived by fourth husband, Michael Pearce (1986-2016), and her three children, Sean Astin, Mackenzie Astin, and Kevin Pearce. Duke was 5ft tall and had a net worth of $5 million. Her first three husbands were Harry Falk, Michael Tell and John Astin. She also dated actors Desi Arnaz, Jr. and Adam West.
