Rachel Maddow is an American liberal political commentator, television host, and broadcaster. She’s best known for hosting ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’ on MSNBC. She made U.S. history as the first openly gay anchor to host a major prime-time news program. Maddow was born on April 1, 1973, in Castro Valley, California. Her father, Robert, is an attorney, and her mother, Elaine, a school administrator. She has an older brother named David. Maddow attended Castro Valley High School where she competed in swimming, basketball, and volleyball. She completed a BA degree in public policy from Stanford University (1994) and a doctorate in political science from Oxford University (2001).

CAREER
Maddow landed her first radio hosting job at WRNX Radio in 1999. There she co-hosted ‘The Dave in the Morning Show’ alongside Dave Brinnel. Her next radio gig was at the WRSI station in Northampton, Massachusetts. Maddow joined ‘Air America’ in 2004 as co-host of the morning show, Unfiltered. The show was canceled in early 2005. Maddow hosted her own weekday radio show ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’ from April 2005 to January 2010. The program featured news, commentary and interviews.

Maddow contributed as a panelist on the MSNBC television program, Tucker (2005-08). She became the station’s political analyst in January 2008. Her very own news/opinion program ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’ premiered on September 8, 2008. The show had a successful launch and has since boosted MSNBC’s ratings. It won multiple accolades including 2x News & Documentary Emmy Awards and a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding TV Journalism. Maddow was honored with the Walter Cronkite Faith and Freedom Award in 2010. She’s also a recipient of the John Steinbeck Award and the Gracie Allen Award.

Maddow’s first book, Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power, was published in 2012. It debuted at the #1 spot on the New York Times bestsellers list. The book examines the U.S. military policies starting from the Vietnam War to the war in Afghanistan.
